Before you know it, winter rolls around and your water heater is working full-time to help your family get through those long cold months. Upon the first sign of spring, you may be forgetting to check in with your water heater. Here are a few ways to give it a little TLC, and keep it running for many years to come!
Visual Checkup– Take a look at all visible seams and attachments. Check for any signs of leaks, and/or soft spots on the ground. You should also pay attention to any corrosion on or around the unit. Save Some Energy– It’s getting warmer outside, so why not lower your water heater‘s temperature? Just turn the dial to the desired temperature, and you’re done. Lowering the temperature even 10 degrees could save you around 5% on energy costs. Remember to only adjust the water heater’s temperature once electricity to heater is turned off.
Mini-flush– To prevent rusting and corrosion, professionals will suggest a mini-flush of the tank to rid of any sediment. A full flush is quite a bit of work, and if you’re up for some DIY home maintenance, this will take a fraction of the time.
-Place a bucket under the drain valve (located near bottom of tank)
-Turn the valve counter clockwise, to release a few gallons of water into your bucket. This will release what hiding at the bottom of the tank!
-Close the valve, and drain bucket.
Voila! Your water heater has now been cleaned, and will help your unit run more quietly.
Give it a Rest– Going out of town for spring break? Most gas heaters have a “vacation” setting, which keeps the pilot light active without heating your water. This will save you money. But don’t forget to turn it off this setting when you get back. No one likes cold shower!
